Managing any sort of business requires a plan of some description. For smaller businesses, that plan might be fairly basic and for larger businesses it might be more complex. Either way, it serves the same purpose and that is to head the business in a particular direction - a strategy for success if you like. The business plan is required because the strategy-makers are often partially or totally separate from the people who do the day-to-day work at the front-line and who may not otherwise appreciate the bigger picture.

The strategy of business planning therefore commences with clarifying what it is that makes your business tick - your vision, mission and values - which together could be called the primary elements of your business personality. Once you have determined this 'personality', you then set out the key achievements you would like to make in the next one to two years or so. These key achievements are defined carefully so progress towards them can be measured - these measures are typically called key performance indicators (KPIs). Operational plans (action plans) then need to be determined so that the day-to-day activities move the business forward towards those key achievements. The final step is to regularly check progress against expectations, and make adjustments as required so you can continue to move on.

We have worked closely with many businesses both big (multi-national) and small (single owner, one employee) in the private and government sectors to assist them in developing their business plans, and it needn't take a long time. In fact in a recent high-level business planning project, the CEO said that the project had achieved more in six months than was usually achieved in two to three years. That might sound like magic, but is more a reflection of the simple and no-nonsense philosophies that we utilise.

The business planning process must be an integrated component of the business. The further it sits from the day-to-day activities, the less likely it is to succeed. If the business planning process is perceived as being too complicated, convoluted or painful, it won't work. Rather than trying to sell you a proprietary (and usually expensive) business planning system or process, we just bring our tool kit and create exactly what you need - no more and no less.

It's two years from now. Your business has consistently achieved its business goals. What is it worth?
