Business owners and managers know that they cannot make all of the decisions in their business and so begin to delegate some of those responsibilities to their employees. Facilitation is one of those processes that can help in developing responsible, committed and self-managing employees. It is most often used when change is required.

By facilitation, we mean using an independent person (eg. us) to run a meeting, workshop or some other gathering of your team/employees on your behalf. The facilitator manages the PROCESS of the meeting, and the participants are responsible for the CONTENT and OUTCOMES. Much of what the facilitator does may seem to be very subtle. Sometimes it may be more directive. It all depends on the composition of the group and the business climate they are operating within.

Clearly, using a facilitator requires an investment of both time and resources, so there needs to be an appropriate return. Some of the benefits to your business could include the following:

  • we will work with you to clarify your expected meeting outcomes (including the less obvious ones such as participation, leadership, self-management, communication, ownership etc)
  • we will use a process that supports the achievement of those outcomes
  • the participants become better problem-solvers and self-leaders in their own right
  • we will model effective leadership, management and communication behaviours
  • you can participate as appropriate without having to manage the underlying processes or use your authority unneccessarily
  • we are very quick to assimilate and can challenge and involve the participants as required
  • we are able to 'steer' the participants in the required direction, whilst maintaining the integrity of the process
  • participants walk out with an agreed implementation plan: What, Who and by When ("3W")
We have facilitated literally hundreds of meetings and workshops, from teams solving simple work issues to multi-national companies building a financial alliance.

What outcomes would you need, to benefit most from using a facilitator?
